SAME BLOOD

“CAN’T YOU SEE she’s in pain? You have to do something!” Dylan’s voice rips me from the numbing darkness.

“She needs the heavenly light to stay anchored to this plane.” Zach’s voice remains even.

“But it’s hurting her.”

“And she’ll pull through it. Give her credit. She’s more powerful than anyone believes.”

“Not if it makes her self-destruct.”

My head spins as two of the guys closest to my heart argue over what’s best for me without even asking my opinion. That seems to be how it always works. Everyone assuming what I should do, be, feel, not feel, love, hate, fight for, fight against—constantly pushing and pulling me, claiming to know what’s best. But in the end, no one really knows the answers to any of this. No one knows me better than I know myself. And it’s time that I remind them.

Sitting up on my elbows in the soft grass of my familiar dream garden, I blink away the dark blue stars dancing around my vision. Both Dylan and Zach turn their attention to me, but only Dylan moves forward to close the space between us before dropping down next to me to hold me in his angelic arms.

His dewy apple scent pushes away my splitting headache, and he holds me without speaking for a long moment. I snuggle against him, enjoying the coolness of his arms and the palpable love he has for me, something I can only feel when our souls are so close.

I can also feel Zach’s soul, and his purity is unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. It’s hard to explain, how his soul can feel so deeply for me in a love unlike Dylan’s. A love I’ve never felt in this state. The only thing I can compare it to is the love I feel for my parents—not my demon dad—but my birth mom and the man who raised me as his daughter. But even then, Zach’s love can’t compare. It’s selfless, irrevocable, unwavering. Loyal. Unchanging.

My gaze flickers to his, and he greets me with his easy-going smile. “No wonder the nephilim likes to visit you in your dreams. They’re quite lovely.”

I open my mouth to say that they haven’t always been this nice, but instead say, “What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be watching my body?”

He shrugs. “I am, and you’re fine. Quite heavenly, actually. Your father is very displeased that he can’t touch you at the moment without getting burned by your holiness.”

I snicker, bumping my shoulder against Dylan’s. He doesn’t return my smile though. “I bet.”

“I’ve never heard someone swear so much at Heaven.”

“Okay, I need to see this. Wake me up.”

“Not so fast,” Dylan says, lacing his fingers through mine. “Your body is in a lot of pain. It’s threatening your soul.”

I frown. “What?” My soul hasn’t been put at risk since I gave it to Zach. That’s what he’s for, to take care of it.

“Don’t let him worry you for nothing, princess. Your soul is fine. I promise. I won’t let anything happen to it.
